Alice is My New BFF

review, spending

I guess I’ve been living under a rock. A few weeks ago, I was cruising around the interwebs when I came across a review for Alice.com, a site that ships household items right to your door with free shipping. (Did you already open the link in another tab? Don’t feel bad; free shipping always gets me, too.)

After reading the review, I decided there had to be a catch. I immediately went to check out Alice for myself. I was fully prepared to click away, but then I found out registration was free. Then I found out there were coupons. Then I found out Alice sells many of the products I buy anyway, and (super amazing bonus) there is an iPhone app. I was filling out the registration form in a matter of minutes.

So what exactly can you get from Alice? Pretty much everything you need to maintain your home. Cleaning products, kitchen items, shampoo, diapers, dog food, makeup….You can even order toilet paper. Alice carries name brands as well as some generics, so I was able to find most of the stuff I use as well as some things I’ve never tried. I was impressed with the selection considering it’s an online store.

It’s really easy to shop with Alice - you can shop by room or by searching for products. When you add something to your cart, you can also add it to your My Products list for easier reordering. You can ask Alice to remind you to reorder each product in the timeframe you choose - anywhere from 2 weeks up to 6 months. Alice also features a tracking tool to help you keep track of how much you’re spending and what categories cost you the most. One caveat: To qualify for free shipping, you do need a minimum of 6 items in your order. Which isn’t a challenge considering how many products are available.

What about prices?

I placed my first order with Alice on Sunday and it arrived yesterday (just two days!). Everything I bought was slightly more expensive than what I pay at Walmart:

Despite the higher prices, I chose Alice over Walmart for a couple reasons:

  • Going to Walmart requires getting dressed, driving 10 minutes, searching for a parking spot, getting that squeaky cart with the one wheel that doesn’t turn, fighting crowds, running into someone from high school who wants to spend an hour inviting me to the class reunion, waiting in line, and driving 10 minutes back home. Shopping with Alice requires sitting on my couch touching my phone screen a couple times.
  • When would I ever leave Walmart with only 7 items? Never in a million years.
  • Alice reminds me what I need to buy. Walmart doesn’t. Which results in 50 trips to Walmart because I keep forgetting something important like toothpaste.

I was so excited to see the box from Alice on my porch when I got home from work! I was very impressed to see that my items were packed well and nothing was broken or leaking. Bonus: I received a 20oz bottle of lemon-flavored Propel Zero free with my order, which was awesome because I love getting free stuff! Overall, I’m pleased with my first order and plan to order again.

The Bottom Line

Alice.com is a great service if you’re willing to pay a little more for the convenience of household supplies delivered to your home. It helps me separate grocery spending from household spending, which is something I have to do manually if I buy those items during the same shopping trip. The iPhone app is easy to use and allowed me to track my order, which arrived in an amazing 2 days after my order was placed. I plan to continue using this site to purchase all the random things I need for my house - like the tagline says, “Everyone needs an Alice!”

Disclosure: I received no compensation of any type for writing this review. I did sign up for a referral link after writing the post - every time someone makes a purchase after signing up through my link, I earn 3% on their purchases. I just think Alice is pretty awesome. If I’m ever cool enough to get paid for reviews, you guys will be the first to know. :)
